Alpha-Stim Cranial Electrotherapy
FDA-cleared microcurrent waveforms that shift the nervous system from hyperarousal into calm, focused alpha-wave dominance — reducing anxiety, improving sleep, and easing depression without medication.
Your nervous system has a reset button.
Alpha-Stim is an FDA-cleared cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) device that uses proprietary microcurrent waveforms to modulate brainwave activity at the neurological level. Unlike medication, which alters brain chemistry through pharmacological pathways, Alpha-Stim works by delivering a gentle electrical signal through small ear clip electrodes — shifting the brain from beta-wave dominance (associated with stress, anxiety, and hyperarousal) into alpha-wave dominance (associated with calm, focused awareness).
The clinical evidence behind Alpha-Stim is substantial. Over 100 peer-reviewed studies support its efficacy for anxiety, insomnia, and depression — with results that are often felt within a single session and build meaningfully over a treatment series. It is used in hospitals, VA medical centers, and integrative clinics worldwide.
Sessions at HydraSpa are quiet, non-invasive, and deeply relaxing. Most clients notice a shift in mood and mental clarity within the first treatment. Alpha-Stim can be used as a standalone session or paired with IV therapy for a comprehensive mind-body reset.
How Alpha-Stim works
- Ear Clip Electrodes
- Small, comfortable clips are placed on the earlobes. A gentle microcurrent — far below the threshold of sensation — is delivered through the skin to the cranial nerves.
- Alpha-Wave Induction
- The proprietary waveform modulates activity in the thalamus and brainstem, promoting alpha-wave dominance — the brainwave state associated with calm, focused awareness and reduced stress reactivity.
- Neurotransmitter Regulation
- Research suggests Alpha-Stim increases serotonin and beta-endorphin levels while reducing cortisol — producing a natural calming effect without pharmacological intervention.
- Cumulative Effect
- Each session builds on the last. Many clients report that after a series of treatments, the nervous system maintains a calmer baseline even between sessions.

Common questions
- Is Alpha-Stim the same as TENS or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?
- No. Alpha-Stim uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) — a distinct modality that delivers microcurrent through ear clip electrodes to modulate brainwave activity. TENS devices target peripheral nerves for pain relief. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific brain regions and requires a clinical prescription. Alpha-Stim is FDA-cleared as a Class II medical device and does not require a prescription.
- Will I feel anything during the session?
- Most clients feel very little — perhaps a faint tingling at the ear clips. The current is far below the threshold of discomfort. What most people notice is a gradual sense of calm and mental quieting as the session progresses. Sessions typically last 20–60 minutes.
- How quickly will I notice results?
- Many clients notice a shift in mood, mental clarity, or sense of calm within a single session. For anxiety and insomnia, meaningful improvement is typically reported within 3–5 sessions. Sleep quality often improves within the first week of regular use.
- Can I use Alpha-Stim if I take medication for anxiety or depression?
- Yes. Alpha-Stim is commonly used alongside psychiatric medications and is not contraindicated with most pharmacological treatments. Some clients use it to reduce medication dosage over time — always in consultation with their prescribing physician. We recommend informing your doctor that you are adding Alpha-Stim to your wellness protocol.
- Are there any contraindications?
- Alpha-Stim is contraindicated for individuals with implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, cochlear implants) and should not be used during pregnancy without physician clearance. It is not recommended for use over areas of active infection or open wounds. Our clinical team will review your health history before your first session.
